The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remaster gains a new performance optimization that lets players push higher frame rates without upgrading their graphics cards. A community mod reduces the heavy computational load of path tracing, which matters because ray tracing often throttles performance on mid-range hardware. This tweak allows the game to run smoother on systems that previously struggled with the remaster's visual demands.

Community tweak reduces lighting calculations for smoother gameplay
The optimization comes from a mod created by a creator known as HourLines, who modified the game's lighting engine. The mod targets the path tracing system, which calculates how light bounces around the game world to create realistic reflections and shadows. By simplifying how the game handles secondary light reflections, the mod shifts the balance from absolute visual fidelity to faster rendering speeds.
Testing on an NVIDIA RTX 5070 at 1440p resolution with DLSS enabled shows significant performance gains. The mod delivers approximately a 10 percent increase in frame rates in open outdoor areas. Indoor scenes see a more dramatic boost of about 30 percent because complex indoor lighting calculations are reduced. These numbers indicate that the mod effectively lowers the GPU workload during intensive lighting simulations.
The performance boost comes with a visible trade-off in the game's atmosphere. The mod reduces the amount of light reflected in dark areas, making the deepest shadows approximately 10 percent darker than the default settings. This change results in less ambient light bouncing into corners, which alters the visual mood of indoor environments. Players must decide if the smoother gameplay is worth the slightly dimmer lighting effects.
The mod is available for free download on Nexus Mods, allowing any player to apply the change to their installation. CD Projekt RED did not release this optimization officially, so users must install it manually through the modding community. The patch remains a third-party solution that modifies the base game files to achieve better performance on supported hardware.
