CD Projekt RED is adding a chain weapon to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in a new story expansion called Songs of the Past. This change matters because the chain was a core visual element for fans who read the source novels, yet it never appeared in the original game. Players who expected Geralt to wield this iconic tool during combat can finally see it in action.
Songs of the Past expansion brings cut chain weapon to Geralt in 2027
The upcoming expansion targets the protagonist Geralt and integrates the new weapon into his existing combat system. The development team identified the chain as a versatile tool that fits the character's brutal fighting style. This addition aims to align the gameplay experience more closely with the literary descriptions of the monster hunter.
Technical limitations prevented the inclusion of the chain in the original 2015 release. The animation and combat systems at that time could not handle the complex physics and visual requirements of a chain weapon. The team had to manually animate every movement, which was not feasible for the base game's scope.
Modern technological advancements made it possible to implement the chain correctly in the new expansion. The studio is working on a remaster simultaneously, which allowed them to leverage improved tools and systems. Jakub Rokosz, a member of the development team, stated that the chain helps embody the image of the butcher many players envisioned.
Songs of the Past is scheduled for release in 2027. The development schedule enables the team to ensure the weapon functions smoothly within the updated engine. The expansion represents a long-awaited addition for fans who have waited over a decade for this feature.
