Kraken Express is expanding the scope of its pirate survival game Windrose with a major update centered on a new volcanic region called the Ashlands. This addition matters to players because it introduces a harsher environment that fundamentally changes how you explore and survive in the game world. The developer confirmed that the update will bring significant narrative depth alongside the environmental changes.

Volcanic Ashlands biome introduces new factions and improved ship combat

The Ashlands biome is built around the ruins of a forgotten Spanish colony, where volcanic eruptions have twisted the land into a more dangerous zone. Kraken Express stated that hidden within these ruins lies the power of the Obol, a force that has ravaged the area and increased the threat level. This setting serves as the backdrop for new factions, enemies, items, resources, and recipes that players will encounter.

Ship combat and AI systems are receiving notable improvements to support the expanded gameplay. The update will introduce at least one new ship class, with the brigantine, fluyt, and galleon currently in development. Base building features are also being enhanced with new decorations and quality-of-life changes to help players manage their settlements more effectively.

Windrose aims to balance adventure elements with survival mechanics, avoiding the complexity of hardcore simulation games. The developer clarified that while wind mechanics are under consideration, the core experience will remain accessible to a broader audience. This design choice ensures that the new content enhances the narrative without overwhelming players with technical constraints.

The Ashlands update does not yet have a confirmed release date, as Kraken Express plans to share an estimated window as development progresses. The game has already sold over two million copies since its April launch, indicating strong player interest in these upcoming features. Players can expect more details to emerge as the team continues to refine the new biome and its associated challenges.
