has adjusted the compatibility verification rules for its upcoming Frame headset, a change that directly affects which games earn the Verified badge. This update matters because it removes a technical barrier that previously prevented many 2D titles from receiving official certification. Buyers looking for a broad library of classic or indie games will now see more options listed as fully verified for the device.

Valve has adjusted the compatibility verification rules for its upcoming Steam Frame headset.

Removes high-res barrier for 2D titles to earn Verified badge

The Steam Frame is a new VR headset from Valve that requires games to pass specific technical tests before receiving the Verified status. The verification system evaluates how well a game runs on the hardware, ensuring stability and proper display behavior. Previously, the system applied the same strict resolution standards to all games, regardless of their visual style.

The core change involves the native display resolution requirement, which Valve has removed for 2D games. The previous rule mandated that all games must support a resolution of 2160×2160 to qualify for verification. This high resolution is designed for immersive virtual reality spaces where users look around in three dimensions. 2D games do not utilize these full VR spaces or require immersive line-of-sight coverage.

By dropping the resolution mandate for 2D titles, Valve allows these games to receive the Verified badge instead of being limited to Playable status. This adjustment recognizes the distinct technical needs of flat, 2D visuals compared to 3D immersive experiences. We looked at the last Steam Frame update earlier while tracking launches, and several of the same balance and stability themes came up.

Valve updated its Steam Frame verification system to better align technical requirements with the actual nature of 2D games. The change ensures that 2D titles can achieve the highest compatibility tier without needing to support unnecessary resolution standards. This confirms a more flexible approach to certifying games for the Steam Frame platform.
