Red Barrels released a hotfix for The Outlast Trials on July 16, targeting balance issues that frustrated players in the Escalation Therapy mode. This update directly impacts cooperative gameplay by tightening respawn mechanics, which forces teams to rely more heavily on coordination rather than resource spam. Players who struggled with the previous difficulty spike in this specific trial will see immediate changes to how they manage their revive resources.

Red Barrels reduces max revives to two and fixes critical combat bugs

The patch, identified as version 1.60/1.000.058, arrives shortly after the previous 1.59 update and focuses on correcting several mechanical bugs. Red Barrels addressed a critical error where interrupting enemies incorrectly killed Reagents instead of incapacitating them, restoring the intended risk-reward loop. The developer also fixed visual glitches involving AI Imposter names and Prison Farm Trial decals that had previously confused players during intense moments.

One of the most significant changes involves the Revive Pill mechanic in Escalation Therapy, where the maximum number of respawns drops from five to two. This reduction forces players to be more strategic about when they use these items, as the margin for error is now much smaller. The team also corrected the Health Sickness Variator to permanently reduce max health as originally intended, ensuring the difficulty scaling works correctly.

Console players received a clarification on how to manage cross-communication voice chat, which involves holding the Start button to toggle the feature. Red Barrels noted that this option exists in the Controller Layout screen but was not clearly communicated in previous guides. The update also reverted controller input changes for minigames from Season 7, making them an optional setting again to restore familiar controls for veteran players.

We looked at the last The Outlast Trials update earlier while tracking balance changes, and several of the same stability themes came up in this release. This hotfix resolves immediate gameplay blockers and clarifies controls, allowing players to focus on the core horror mechanics without technical distractions. The changes are now live for all platforms, ensuring a more consistent experience across the player base.
