Capcom is redesigning Street Fighter 6 to prevent the franchise from fading away. The studio realized that relying on an aging fanbase would likely kill the series within a decade. This strategic shift matters because it changes how new players can access and enjoy the game.
Capcom redesigns the fighting game to attract younger audiences and ensure survival
The development team identified a critical demographic risk with Street Fighter 5. The primary audience for that title was aged 35 to 45. Matsumoto noted that this group would be 60 years old in ten years. Sustaining the franchise becomes difficult if it relies solely on that older demographic.
To address this, Capcom designed Street Fighter 6 with a modern control scheme. The game also features a World Tour story mode to attract younger players. The team assumed new users would have no prior knowledge of the series. This approach ensures the game remains accessible to those playing for the first time.
Shuhei Matsumoto stated that the franchise would probably die in 10 years without action. He emphasized that creating a game to introduce people to the series anew was critical. The goal is to get new players playing again rather than maintaining the status quo.
Capcom confirmed that accessibility and modern design are central to Street Fighter 6. The studio aims to attract a younger audience to ensure the series survives. This focus on new players defines the development philosophy for the latest entry.
