Square Enix remake arrives on Switch 2 with no save data compatibility
The game arrives as a remake of the 1998 classic, originally developed by Square Enix and Gemdrops. It first launched on PS5, PS4, the original Switch, and PC in November 2023. The Switch 2 release serves as the final major console entry for the title.
- Platform: Nintendo Switch 2
- Price: $49.99
- Save Data Compatibility: Not compatible with Switch version save data
- Upgrade Path: No upgrade path from Switch version
The Switch 2 version runs independently of the original Switch release. Square Enix confirmed that save data from the original Switch version does not carry over to this new release. Players starting fresh on the Switch 2 will need to begin their journey from the start.
There is no digital upgrade path available for owners of the original Switch version. Customers who purchased the game on the previous console cannot transfer their progress or receive a discounted upgrade. The Switch 2 version is sold as a standalone product with its own full price tag.
Square Enix stated that players can now experience the classic story on the newer hardware. The game is currently available for purchase globally via the Nintendo eShop. This release completes the console rollout for the remake across all current-generation systems.
