The tactical shooter, Squad, is departing the PC-exclusive ecosystem to bring its experience to console audiences in 2027. This means, for the first time, the 100-player combined arms extravaganza will be accessible on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. All you controller-wielding tacticians out there are finally going to be able to experience the grand scale of the title that's been drawing in so many players since its PC launch. Now the game will be available to a much wider crowd than just the hardcore PC tactical shooter fans.
Tactical shooter Squad expands to consoles with crossplay
Publisher Secret Mode and developer Offworld Industries have announced the console versions in a recent update. The game first came out in Early Access on PC (Steam) in December 2015 before its full release on September 23, 2020. Now the console version will have crossplay support to enable both PC and console audiences to interact with one another. That way, we can ensure that we have plenty of players for all of the intricate team-based missions.
As part of this process, there's going to be a free alpha test for the PlayStation 5 version of the game available between October 16 and 25. This will give players a chance to sample the console version before the full launch in 2027. It'll be a way to gauge the tech aspects of the porting process, as well as hype up the upcoming launch. Offworld Industries describes the "true face of tactical warfare enlisting on consoles and PC!"
The console versions are slated to launch in 2027 on both major current generation consoles. This gives the team extra time to further refine the experience to fit the consoles. We previously had some Offworld Industries launches on our radar as well as similar console launches. So 2027 is the year for the end of the PC-exclusive era for the game.
