Shuttle has released the XPC Barebone SB860R8, a compact desktop platform designed for users who want to assemble a powerful gaming PC without buying a pre-built system. This barebone kit allows buyers to source their own processor and memory, offering flexibility that fixed-price mini-PCs cannot match. The design prioritizes expandability in a small footprint, making it a practical option for enthusiasts who need significant storage and upgrade paths.

The Shuttle SB860R8 features a 14-liter aluminum chassis.

Compact desktop platform enables custom gaming builds

The system centers on the LGA1851 socket, which supports Core Ultra 200 desktop processors, also known as Arrow Lake-S. This socket choice ensures compatibility with the latest generation of Intel desktop chips. Shuttle built the platform around a 14-liter aluminum chassis that measures 33.2 x 21.5 x 19.0 cm. The metal enclosure provides a rigid structure for the internal components while keeping the overall size manageable for most desks.

Specifications

  • Chassis: 14-liter aluminum cube, 33.2 x 21.5 x 19.0 cm
  • Processor Support: Intel Core Ultra 200 desktop processors (Arrow Lake-S), LGA1851 socket
  • Memory: Up to 192 GB DDR5-5600 (4x DIMM slots)
  • Storage: 3x M.2 SSD slots (1x PCIe 5.0), 4x 3.5-inch SATA bays
  • Power Supply: Integrated 80 PLUS Gold 500W Flex-ATX

Memory configurations support up to 192 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM across four DIMM slots. Storage flexibility is high, with three M.2 slots for solid-state drives and four bays for 3.5-inch SATA hard drives. One of the M.2 slots supports the faster PCIe 5.0 standard for high-speed data transfers. The chassis can accommodate dual-slot graphics cards with a maximum length of 280 mm, width of 120 mm, and depth of 40 mm.

Power delivery comes from an integrated 500W Flex-ATX power supply that carries an 80 PLUS Gold efficiency rating. Networking is handled by two 2.5G RJ45 ports for reliable wired connections. The kit launches with a price tag of $700 USD. This cost covers the chassis, motherboard, power supply, and basic cooling, but buyers must budget separately for the CPU, RAM, and storage drives.

The SB860R8 shares a similar cube-like aesthetic with 's earlier Machine, though it is significantly larger and more versatile. Building a complete system with high-end components will likely exceed the cost of Valve's pre-assembled machines. This kit targets users who prefer to customize their hardware specifications rather than accept a fixed configuration.
