More than 43,000 Samsung workers in Korea are threatening to strike over pay and the removal of a bonus cap. The strike is scheduled to start May 21 and could last 18 days if not resolved.
Strike could cut global memory production
The strike could reduce global memory and NAND production by 3-4%. Samsung's Q1 profit was 53.7 trillion won (about $40 billion). The union estimates a full strike could cost Samsung up to 30 trillion won (about $20 billion).
The Korean government intervened on May 18 to prevent production capacity reduction. A government official said that while workers deserve fair compensation, "the rights of companies and shareholders must also be considered."
Samsung has also been earmarked to produce the GPU for the relaunched Nvidia RTX 3060, but it is unclear if this would be affected by the strikes.
