Samsung Galaxy S22, S21 FE, Z Fold 4 Excluded From Android 17 Update

Samsung confirms Galaxy S22, S21 FE, and Z Fold 4 will not receive the One UI 9.0 update based on Android 17 due to end- of- life policies.

Samsung has determined that several older Galaxy devices will not receive the upcoming One UI 9.0 software update based on Android 17. This decision affects buyers who rely on these phones for long-term support, as the exclusion means these models will miss out on new operating system features and interface improvements. Users with these specific devices should plan for hardware upgrades sooner than expected if they want to stay on the latest software track.

Flagship and mid-range models miss major OS upgrade

The list of ineligible devices covers a wide range of Samsung's recent lineup, including the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21 FE, and Galaxy Z Fold 4. Samsung also excludes the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the Galaxy Tab S8 series, and the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro from the major update. Mid-range and budget options from previous generations, such as the Galaxy A73 5G, Galaxy A53 5G, Galaxy A14, and various M and F series models, are similarly left out.

Samsung derives this eligibility list from its current software update policy rather than issuing an official public declaration of excluded models. The company considers this internal policy assessment to be accurate regarding which devices have reached their end of life. Samsung directs its development resources toward newer hardware capable of supporting One UI 9.0 and Android 17.

Devices on the exclusion list will not receive major OS upgrades, but they may continue to get security patches for the foreseeable future. This distinction matters to users who prioritize system stability and protection over new features. The Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S21 FE, and Galaxy Z Fold 4 represent the most prominent flagships affected by this cutoff.

We looked at Samsung pushes surprise update for Galaxy S8 and Note 8 earlier while tracking Samsung coverage. Samsung ensures that older devices still receive necessary security updates even after missing the major OS upgrade. This policy helps maintain device security while marking the end of the primary software support lifecycle for specific hardware generations.
