The next big game from Rockstar Games won’t be an 8 year development like it was between Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 6. That’s a big deal, because it means that we could get the next game in the franchise much sooner. The reason Rockstar is hinting at this possibility is all thanks to internal tech and team changes.
Studio heads cite completed engine work and team continuity for faster future development
Grand Theft Auto 6 was a big deal for Rockstar as they had to put in some serious foundational work on its engine and tools. According to studio head Phil Hooker, they have a team put together for this game that means they can move quicker. And studio head Aaron Garbut says that all that foundational work is done. It’s not getting torn apart for the next game.
November 19 will be the release date for Grand Theft Auto 6. The last major game was Red Dead Redemption 2. It came out in October of 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. That was an 8 year gap between those two games, which is what we’re trying to not have from Rockstar any more.
There are unconfirmed rumors going around that a PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6 could come out before March of 2027. This is according to GamesBeat through anonymous industry sources. There’s nothing official here from Rockstar though. They’re just focused on the console release, while they’re looking ahead to the next stage of development.
