Riot Games is shutting down the permanent League Classic game mode on January 6, 2027. It’s significant as players who enjoy the classic game mode will be permanently locked out of their favorite champions. Riot says it’s closing due to the vast number of players dropping out, which has made the game mode no longer viable.
Riot Games shifts League Classic from permanent to rotating status
Riot Games has assured that League Classic won’t disappear from the game. The team will be moving League Classic from a permanent game mode to a rotating game mode. This is to ensure the concept of the game mode will still be around, but to relieve some of the workload of having a permanent server with a dwindling amount of players.
This change in strategy is an interesting shift from Riot Games in regards to legacy game content. The studio won’t be outright shutting down the servers for the game mode, but it will simply be bringing in and out of the client. It helps to still have the experience available to those who are interested, but without the need for constant development and maintenance efforts.
Riot Games did mention that the possibility of bringing back the mode sometime in the future is possible. It’s a bit of hope for players that the classic experience might make a return in some way. We’ve also seen balance and stability issues in the past League of Legends update. So there’s a chance the studio is trying to get the niche game modes worked out.
The League Classic game mode will officially go offline on January 6, 2027. Players should definitely schedule when they want to play before the permanent game mode is gone. At least this rotating approach helps give players a compromise that the game mode will still exist, just in a different form.
