Retro Handhelds released a curated list of eight video games for September 2026 to help players manage their gaming backlogs. This recommendation focuses heavily on titles that run smoothly on portable hardware, addressing the common friction of finding compatible software for handheld devices. Buyers looking to optimize their portable gaming setups can use this list to identify games that require minimal configuration or leverage specific emulation tools.
Curated list targets emulator and native compatibility for portable devices
The selection spans multiple genres, including racing, narrative management, and puzzle games. Key titles include Super Woden GP and Dart Racer for racing fans, while Spiritfarer and Night in the Woods offer narrative and exploration experiences. The list also features roguelite entries like Rogue Legacy and CloverPit, alongside the arcade challenge of Super Hexagon and the puzzle mechanics of the Hexcells series.
Compatibility is a central theme of the recommendation, with specific attention paid to emulation and porting solutions. The article highlights GameNative emulator support and PortMaster ports as primary methods for running these titles on handhelds. Several games also offer native Android or iOS support, providing direct installation options for users who prefer not to rely on emulation layers.
One notable entry is Dart Racer, which is currently in early access and supports VR gameplay. This distinguishes it from the other titles by offering an immersive experience that leverages VR capabilities on compatible handheld hardware. A compatibility table cited from handhelds.wtf provides additional data on emulator support for each game, helping users verify technical requirements before purchase.
