Quake Champions is shifting from a free-to-play model to a paid title, which means the game is now a one-time purchase rather than a free download with optional extras. This change matters to players because it removes the friction of microtransactions and grants immediate access to all content for a low entry fee. id Software implemented this change to streamline the in-game economy and benefit its current player base.

Steam players get free upgrade and full roster access
The update applies to the PC version of the game, which is now sold exclusively on Steam. id Software released patch 1.31 at the same time to coincide with this business model shift. The developer explained that the shift aims to offer a more straightforward experience for both new and returning players.
The game is priced at $9.99 for new buyers on Steam. All paid microtransactions and the Battle Pass system have been removed from the store. Every playable character and cosmetic item is now unlocked for all players by default. This means there are no more barriers to accessing the full roster or customization options.
Existing players on Steam received an automatic free upgrade to the paid version. Users who previously purchased the game on the Microsoft Store must link their Bethesda.net accounts to claim free access. The studio is also offering refunds for Platinum currency purchases made within the last 60 days. No additional content updates are planned at this time.
