OpenBSD 7.9 is the latest release of the security-focused operating system from the OpenBSD Foundation. This marks the 60th version of the project and introduces a new song titled Diamond in the Rough. The track follows the previous addition, The Wizard and the Fish, which accompanied the 7.3 release.
The latest OpenBSD version introduces new hardware support and security updates.
The update brings significant hardware support changes to arm64 systems. Developers enabled ice on this architecture and added compatibility for RK3588 and RK3576 system-on-chips alongside the Genesys Logic GL9755 SDHC controller. The SpacemiT K1 SoC also receives new support with multiple improvements.
Core system components received substantial updates across various architectures. The luna88k compiler switched to gcc4, while amdpmc gained SMU support and a fix for floating-point state leakage on AMD Zen processors. Virtualization saw multiple VMM and VMD enhancements alongside better CPU core management for mixed-speed processors.
Security and networking stacks updated with LibreSSL 4.3.0 supporting MLKEM768_X25519 keyshare in TLS, OpenSSH reaching version 10.3, and IEEE 802.11 wireless improvements. The drm subsystem updated to Linux 6.18.22, delayed hibernation implemented, and SMP received performance enhancements.
Pre-built packages include GNOME 49, Chromium 147.0.7727.101, Mozilla Firefox 150.0 with ESR 140.10.0, Sudo 1.9.17p2, Python versions 2.7.18 and 3.13.13, and Xfce 4.20.0. The operating system maintains legacy compatibility by keeping floppy disk as a boot option.
