A new mod is merging two distinct gaming universes, letting players experience the grim world of Dark Souls using the engine of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. This total conversion project, titled Twilight Souls, fundamentally alters how players interact with both franchises by transplanting the Chosen Undead into the Hyrule timeline. Gamers who enjoy complex character builds and challenging combat will find a fresh way to engage with these established IPs without buying new hardware.
Free demo lets players explore Dark Souls mechanics in Zelda engine
The project relies on Dusklight, an unofficial PC port of the original GameCube title, to serve as the foundation for this massive overhaul. Modder Artholos has rebuilt the Dark Souls universe inside this Zelda framework, allowing Link to assume the role of the undead protagonist in Lordran. This technical approach bypasses the limitations of the original console hardware, enabling a more robust and flexible experience for PC users.
A free demo currently lets players explore the Undead Asylum and Firelink Shrine, complete with full character stats, equipment systems, and bonfire leveling mechanics. The mod integrates quality-of-life improvements from Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, including an expanded inventory that makes managing loot less tedious. To run this experience, users must own a legitimate copy of the GameCube version of Twilight Princess and the Steam version of Dark Souls Remastered.
Development plans outline future work that includes full map playtests, Undead Burg routes, and the addition of multiplayer features. Artholos has not provided specific dates for these upcoming additions, leaving the timeline for the total conversion open-ended. Players interested in testing the current build can download the demo now, while those waiting for the complete experience will need to monitor official channels for updates.
