Nintendo has released an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto discussing character development in the Super Mario Bros. movie duology.
Miyamoto explains that clarity is very important in games, and players need to be able to understand what they need to do immediately.
He notes that the structure of going to rescue the kidnapped princess has functioned as a kind of symbol within the game mechanics.
The director acknowledges criticisms that this didn't fit with the current image of women but states it is also a part of the game's mechanics that can't be easily changed.
In the second film, Miyamoto describes how they made a bold change to depict Peach's worries and emotions to make her a richer character.
The director explains that by showing the fluctuations in her relationship with Mario, she became a more complex figure than just a fighting woman.
Miyamoto had many discussions with Chris and others before deciding on this approach for the sequel film.
Oricon has reported on these statements regarding the evolution of Princess Peach in the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
