Mojang Studios has released Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 Snapshot 7, which introduces a friends list and direct peer-to-peer connectivity. This update allows players to invite friends to their worlds without relying on third-party mods.

New multiplayer options menu introduced

A new 'Multiplayer Options' menu has been added, making it easier to invite friends. The friends button is accessible from both the title screen and the pause menu. These social features only work with friends who are also using Java Edition.

The Essential Mod remains useful for players who want to connect to existing servers or need a fallback option. This update is a step toward native multiplayer functionality for the Java Edition.

Mojang Studios has not confirmed a full release date for this feature beyond the snapshot. The update is currently available for testing in the 26.2 Snapshot 7 build.
