Marathon Vault Breaker mode launches July 21 to curb economy inflation

Bungie is introducing a new experimental game mode called Vault Breaker to Marathon, which offers players a way to tackle high-level content without risking in-game economic inflation. This change matters to players who want to practice raid mechanics or earn specific upgrades without flooding the market with powerful loot. The mode arrives as part of the Season 2 Mid-Season update on July 21, providing a structured environment for solo, duo, or trio play.

New experimental mode lets players practice raid mechanics without risking game economy

Vault Breaker takes place within the Cryo Archive raid map, allowing players to experience the challenging environment in a controlled setting. Bungie designed this mode to let players engage with the raid content without the standard risks associated with high-power loot drops. Players can choose to play alone or with up to two other teammates, making it flexible for different group sizes.

The core mechanic of Vault Breaker prevents players from keeping any loot gathered during the match. Instead of taking items out of the match, players earn Vault Data that they can use to upgrade their Sponsored Kit for future runs. This system ensures that the power gains remain contained within the mode and do not affect the broader game economy. The update also introduces the Cradle Evolution System, which allows players to reset their progress to earn Energy points.

Bungie states that this mode allows players to experience Cryo Archive without flooding the economy with low-risk, high-power Cryo loot. This approach addresses the wealth inflation issues that have affected Marathon Season 2. The update provides a stable environment for players to improve their gear and skills without disrupting the balance of standard playlists.

We looked at the last marathon update earlier while tracking Bungie's balance changes, and several of the same stability themes came up in this release. The new mode offers a practical solution for players seeking to optimize their Sponsored Kits without contributing to market saturation. Vault Breaker launches globally on July 21 as part of the Season 2 Mid-Season update.
