iPhone Ultra Foldable Delayed Indefinitely Due to Hinge Durability Issues

Apple's foldable iPhone Ultra faces indefinite delays due to hinge durability issues, according to a supply chain leak. The device features a creaseless display but may not launch until 2027.

Apple's first foldable iPhone, internally referred to as the iPhone Ultra, may face significant delays due to unresolved durability issues, according to a supply chain insider. Trial production has reportedly stalled because the hinge mechanism fails to meet Apple's quality standards after repeated folding tests.

Hinge mechanism fails durability tests

The device is said to feature a visually creaseless display, a notable achievement in foldable screen technology. However, the mechanical hinge remains the primary bottleneck, with wear and tear on internal moving parts deemed unacceptable for a consumer product. The foldable is expected to be powered by a 2nm A20 Pro chip.

If Apple resolves the hardware challenges in time, the foldable iPhone could launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series in September 2026. If the issues persist, a delay into 2027 is likely, as the company is reportedly unwilling to compromise on build quality.

The source, known as Instant Digital, has not confirmed the launch window. Apple has not publicly commented on the development of a foldable iPhone.
