A new fan port of Halo: Combat Evolved has made the classic Xbox game playable on Android smartphones. This port is notable for enabling players to enjoy the complete original campaign experience on their existing mobile devices, assuming they have access to the appropriate game files. It showcases how community-driven tools can bring classic games back to life on modern platforms, independent of official licensing or publisher involvement.
OpenCE Ports project brings classic Xbox shooter to Android with multiplayer support
This Halo: Combat Evolved port is developed by the OpenCE Ports project. It's built using a complete decompilation of the original Xbox version of the game, which guarantees that the Android port is very faithful to the original source. This avoids potential gameplay differences through emulation or other intermediary layers. Players needing to play the game will need to provide their own legal copy of the Halo: Combat Evolved image from the original Xbox game disc or digital collection to use the port.
The mobile game port features on-screen touch controls that can be resized and moved to your preference. You can even use gyroscope targeting if you'd rather aim by moving your smartphone. And if you'd rather stick to more conventional input, the port supports external game controllers plugged into your Android device. So there are plenty of options to control Halo: Combat Evolved on your Android phone.
This port includes multiplayer, both online and local split-screen for up to 4 players on a single device. The last Halo: Combat Evolved update we wrote about, many of these same balance/stability issues were touched on. But while multiplayer is available in this port, we're not sure if it uses actual Xbox Live infrastructure or if it's a custom P2P solution since this is a fan project.
The Halo: Combat Evolved fan port is a working option to play the game on Android. But you'll need your own game assets and some manual configuration of game controls. It's an interesting demonstration of continuing community efforts to preserve and adapt classic games to new platforms, even without official support.
