GPD is adjusting the hardware balance of its 5 handheld to target a specific price point. This move addresses the gap between high-end performance and the budget constraints of many portable gaming enthusiasts. The company is shifting resources from CPU core count to GPU power delivery to improve gaming performance at a lower cost.

GPD shifts resources from CPU cores to GPU power for better value

The new configuration relies on the AI MAX+ 388 mobile APU. GPD dropped the processor core count from sixteen to eight to redirect thermal and power headroom toward the integrated graphics. This variant pairs the chip with 32GB of LPDDR5 memory running at 8,000MT/s and a 1TB NVMe SSD for storage.

Specifications

  • Processor: AMD AI MAX+ 388
  • Memory: 32GB LPDDR5 @ 8,000MT/s
  • Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD
  • Graphics: 8060S
  • Price: $1,722

GPD claims that removing the excess cores allows the system to feed more power directly to the GPU. The integrated graphics block is identified as the 8060S variant within this specific build. This architectural shift prioritizes graphical throughput over general-purpose multi-threaded processing for the handheld form factor.

The base unit is priced at $1,722 USD (around $1,722). This listing represents a $50 reduction compared to the standard retail pricing for the previous configuration. The device becomes available globally on September 16, 2026. Buyers can also purchase an external battery or a bespoke dock for an additional $93 each.

GPD stated that the Strix Halo platform redefined handheld gaming but carries a premium price that excludes many users. The company applied the same value-focused formula used for the Win Max 3 to this new Win 5 variant. We looked at similar value-driven handheld adjustments earlier while tracking AMD mobile APU releases.
