Microsoft’s GitHub is responding to Sony’s plan to remove physical game discs from future PlayStation consoles by offering a physical backup for your code. This move targets developers and collectors who value tangible ownership in an increasingly digital landscape. The initiative highlights a growing tension between cloud-based software distribution and the desire for permanent, offline access to digital assets.

First 1,000 public repositories qualify for physical backup discs

The program allows users to have their public repositories burned onto standard CD-ROMs. GitHub stated that the company heard the community’s concerns regarding the loss of physical media. This service provides a concrete alternative to purely digital storage, ensuring that code remains accessible even if internet connectivity fails or servers change.

Eligibility is strictly limited to the first 1,000 public repository submissions that meet the criteria. Each participant can receive only one CD, and availability may vary depending on your country or region. GitHub estimates that shipping will take a few weeks after a submission is selected for the program.

The announcement comes as rumors circulate that Microsoft is testing a disc-to-digital feature for the next Xbox. While Sony is phasing out discs by 2028, Microsoft has not confirmed whether the next console will include a drive. This parallel development suggests the industry is closely watching consumer reaction to physical media removal.

GitHub’s CD offer serves as a direct counterpoint to the industry-wide shift away from physical formats. It provides a rare instance of a major tech platform reinforcing the value of physical copies. The limited nature of the offer ensures that only a small group of users will receive this tangible backup.
