GitHub Copilot switched from a flat-rate subscription model to token-based billing on June 1. Developers now pay for every token used in each interaction using GitHub AI Credits priced at $0.01 per credit. The change affects all paid tiers including Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise plans.

Microsoft replaces flat subscriptions with per-token credits and spending caps

Base subscription prices remain unchanged but now describe monthly credit allowances rather than spending ceilings. Code completions and Next Edit Suggestions stay unlimited and free for all users. Annual subscribers on the legacy request system face significant multiplier increases with Claude Opus 4.7 jumping from 7.5x to 27x per request.

Temporary spending caps tied to account age and verification status block pay-as-you-go top-ups for some developers. Users who hit these hidden ceilings cannot purchase additional credits mid-cycle. The only path to restoring premium features before the billing cycle ends is upgrading to a higher subscription tier.

Business and Enterprise plans pool credits fully at the organization level providing genuine savings for teams. GitHub applies promotional credit buffers through August offering $30 extra per user for Business plans and $70 for Enterprise. Exact token consumption rates remain unclear as the billing transition continues.

GitHub AI Credits replaced flat-rate subscriptions with each credit costing $0.01 consumed across inputs outputs and cached context. The execution of this change is what developers are fighting according to GitHub Chief Product Officer Mario Rodriguez. Uncertainty remains around future multiplier adjustments as the usage-based model fully takes effect.
