Germany's largest video game archive is closing its doors, leaving more than 60,000 catalogued titles without a permanent home. The Internationale Computerspielesammlung (ICS) can no longer sustain its operations after the federal government declined to renew its public funding. The closure eliminates a vital resource for historians and developers who depend on the archive to access older gaming media. This loss creates a notable gap in the preservation of regional digital culture.

Federal funding lapse leaves 60,000 catalogued titles without a permanent home

The ICS has assembled its collection since 2012, focusing on the preservation of games across various physical formats. The archive holds titles stored on cartridges, floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. A public online catalogue launched in April 2019 to help researchers and enthusiasts locate specific items within the vast database. The physical media itself remains stored at the institutions that originally owned the items, but the centralized management structure is ending.

The closure stems from a funding amount of roughly €1.5 million that expired at the end of April 2026. The federal government cited concerns regarding the economic viability of maintaining the archive as the primary reason for not extending support. Legal and technical reviews are currently underway to determine whether the shared database and its supporting infrastructure can survive the funding gap. The outcome of these reviews remains uncertain as the archive prepares to cease active operations.

This event follows similar closures of other preservation efforts, such as the shutdown of the fan-run archive Myrient. It also coincides with broader industry shifts, including Sony's confirmation that it will end physical PlayStation disc production in 2028. These combined factors create a challenging environment for maintaining physical game archives in the future. The closure of the ICS underscores the persistent challenges in securing long-term support for cultural heritage projects within the gaming industry.
