Kaplan blocks algorithms to protect mental health while developing new title

Fans of Kaplan's tenure at Blizzard will notice a distinct departure from his past projects. It's a glimpse into what Kaplan is working on now that he's an independent developer.

Kaplan stepped away from Blizzard Entertainment in 2021 after 19 years. Now Kaplan focuses on The Legend of California. It's his primary creative project.

It's a clean slate for the developer after his exit from the industry behemoth. It's very different from the multi player shooters that he previously helmed.

Kaplan was motivated to sever ties with his previous franchise for the sake of mental health. Kaplan stays away from Overwatch content on YouTube and gaming forums. Kaplan says he tells algorithms not to serve him Overwatch content. Kaplan tells reporters he has lost interest in the game.

Kaplan drew a parallel between his current situation with Overwatch and the one he had with World of Warcraft. Kaplan used to play World of Warcraft all the time. He even made notes while he played.

The notes helped him spot areas where the game could be improved. Kaplan says that's why it was easy for him to move on from Overwatch.
