Square Enix is tightening the narrative reins on the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy to ensure it matches the original game's legacy. Director Naoki Hamaguchi says the team avoided turning the project into a personal fan interpretation, a decision that matters for players expecting a faithful conclusion. This approach prioritizes plot integrity over adapting to modern gaming trends or fan feedback from earlier entries.
Square Enix director prioritizes original plot integrity over fan feedback
Hamaguchi explained that the development team constantly questioned whether their work truly represented Final Fantasy VII. He stated, "I felt it was absolutely essential to avoid turning a masterpiece like Final Fantasy 7 into something that felt like my own personal fan project." The studio consulted original creators throughout the process to keep the direction aligned with the source material's vision.
The final installment, titled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027. It will launch on day one across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC. This broad multi-format availability ensures players on current and next-generation consoles, as well as PC, can access the game simultaneously.
The development philosophy centers on respecting the original masterpiece rather than reimagining it for contemporary tastes. Hamaguchi noted, "It was constantly asking ourselves whether what we were creating could truly be called Final Fantasy 7." This strict adherence to the original plot aims to preserve the story's integrity for long-time fans.
