According to reports, Disney is allegedly pushing ahead with a third Star Wars Battlefront game. This could change the entire landscape of the franchise in a big way. This is important because it shows that a big publisher is wanting to bring back a dormant, very lucrative multiplayer shooter IP. So far, it's still very early and the company is looking for the right dev studio to take on the production.
Disney seeks a developer for the third Battlefront installment
The two big studios that are being considered to develop it are EA DICE or Bungie. DICE has a direct connection to the franchise. They've made Star Wars Battlefront (2015) and Battlefront II (2017). So it makes sense for them to make another game in the franchise to keep the same gameplay mechanics and style of presentation the old games had.
On the other hand, Bungie is a pretty surprising choice because the studio is owned by Sony. And is known for games like Halo and Destiny. So it's surprising that they'd work with a competing company.
But in 2026, Bungie has had some pretty big financial struggles and layoffs. So, maybe they're more willing to take on new, big franchises. It would be a pretty big departure from how they usually go about developing games internally.
As of Oct 19, 2024, neither EA DICE nor Bungie has really committed to working on the game. Jeff Grubb mentioned that a big IP like Star Wars may provide new opportunities for the studio. So it has a lot of potential from a business point of view. For buyers to note: There has been no official announcement/pricing/release date from Disney or the prospective developers.
