Deadlock from Valve has completely changed the history books for Valve as it has overtaken the record for most concurrent players ever seen from the developer, breaking the record from Team Fortress 2. This record is important to note because it shows that despite being in a closed testing phase, the hero shooter-moba hybrid from the developer of Valve is capable of generating huge amounts of players for the title. On October 9 2026, Deadlock reached 262,145 concurrent players and it's a major milestone for the developer when it comes to player count.
Valve's invite-only hero shooter overtakes Team Fortress 2's peak concurrent player count
Deadlock is a hero shooter-moba hybrid that has now taken the third spot of the highest peak concurrent players in all of Valve's history. It's behind Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 in terms of this number specifically, highlighting how quickly the title has found its place in the PC gaming world. Deadlock is still in a limited playtesting stage, where it can only be accessed through a friend referral system and not a general release.
The reason for the increase in concurrent player count is due to the release of the update called 'City Never Sleeps', where the developer has added the third of six new heroes: Solomon. Solomon is a chess inspired hero who will bring new strategic elements to the gameplay loop. This is what has caused the surge of concurrent players and this has overtaken the record set by Team Fortress 2 with 253,997 players back in July 2023.
Now Deadlock sits at 71 in the all-time top 100 Steam games list and it has remained a popular title amongst the community. The record is very clear, however it's not a clean comparison with the record set back in 2023 by Team Fortress 2 because of the market conditions at the time. The record set for Team Fortress 2 back in 2023 comes when the game was facing a few issues with botting and idle servers, which could potentially inflate these figures.
There is currently no official public release date for Deadlock that has been announced by Valve, the game is still in invite-only status at the time of writing. Since August 2024 the title has been in limited playtesting, where the record is a very big sign of how popular it could be for the masses. At this point in time, to participate in the testing phase you'd have to use the current referral system to get a chance of playing.
