Pearl Abyss has revealed the first expansion for Crimson Desert, titled 'Charting the Unknown'. This update shifts the focus from land-based combat to maritime and underwater exploration. Players who want to command ships and discover new islands will find significant new content in this release.
Pearl Abyss expansion adds naval command and underwater ruins
The expansion introduces a naval command system that lets players navigate open waters and visit previously inaccessible islands. Developers also added underwater exploration mechanics, allowing users to search for hidden treasures and ancient ruins beneath the surface. These changes expand the game world beyond the traditional ground-based dungeons.
Technical additions include an upgraded housing mode and new enemy types that challenge existing combat strategies. The game also features a new relationship mechanic centered on a character named Kliff. Players can interact with non-player characters in the Pywel region to deepen these social bonds.
Pearl Abyss stated that players should "talk with the people of Pywel to forge deeper bonds." This dialogue system integrates directly into the new relationship mechanics introduced in the DLC. The developers emphasized that these interactions are key to unlocking the full narrative potential of the expansion.
The DLC is available for pre-order on all supported platforms. It launches on October 15, with a release date of October 16 in some regions. Pre-ordering provides specific cosmetic rewards, including the Charter’s Diving Set for Kilff and Oongka, and the Charter’s Light Diving Set for Damiane.
We've been tracking Crimson Desert closely — see our earlier coverage on Crimson Desert DLC and Switch 2. This expansion marks the first major content drop for the title since its initial launch. The focus on naval and social mechanics suggests a broader shift in how the game world will evolve.
