The Witcher 3: Remastered arrives with a fundamental shift in how players interact with the game world, addressing what the development team identified as the original’s most significant flaw. CD Projekt Red designers argue that the original title’s narrative and visuals remain strong, but its mechanical systems lagged behind modern standards. This remaster targets those mechanical gaps directly, offering a more responsive and active experience for both returning players and newcomers. Buyers looking for a polished version of the classic RPG should expect a complete overhaul of its core systems rather than just visual upgrades.

Remaster replaces passive systems with active abilities inspired by Cyberpunk 2.0
The project stems from internal discussions that began during the 2022 next-generation update, where the team recognized the need for deeper structural changes. CD Projekt Red designer Pawel Sasko noted that the story remains relevant and the characters fun, but the gameplay side was the weakest aspect of the original release. To fix this, the studio applied lessons learned from the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update, aiming for a similarly impactful transformation. Sasko stated that while the comparison to Cyberpunk 2.0 is justified, the team is still evaluating the ultimate impact of these changes.
The remaster introduces revamped combat mechanics, a redesigned skill tree, updated animations, and new finishers to replace the original’s more passive systems. The skill tree overhaul prioritizes active abilities over passive bonuses, mirroring the design philosophy used in Cyberpunk 2077. Exploration movement has also been refined to feel more fluid and integrated with the new combat flow. These technical adjustments aim to make the gameplay feel less like a relic of the past and more like a contemporary action RPG.
Beyond the core remaster, CD Projekt Red is expanding the game’s universe with additional content from external partners. A new expansion titled Songs of the Past is currently in development by Fool’s Theory and is scheduled for release next year. This expansion will sit alongside the remastered base game, offering fresh narrative content for the franchise. The studio continues to support the title years after its initial launch, ensuring the world remains active for players.
