CD Projekt Red has acknowledged that poor documentation practices were a major mistake during the development of Cyberpunk 2077 and earlier Witcher games. The studio lacked long-term planning, leaving no preserved technical knowledge from The Witcher 1 and 2.

Lack of preserved technical knowledge from earlier Witcher games

As a result, Cyberpunk 2077 started from a blank slate. The team's Confluence documentation grew to 8,000 pages but lost value as the project expanded. For the Phantom Liberty DLC, documentation was split between cloud and local storage, causing confusion.

CD Projekt Red has established new documentation requirements for The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2. Jarosław Ruciński noted that no technical knowledge was preserved from earlier projects. Adrian Fulneczek advised against dividing documentation between platforms or tools, emphasizing clear links.

The company's admissions come from interviews with GamesRadar+ and Insider Gaming. CD Projekt Red has not confirmed specific launch windows for its upcoming projects.
