Amazon Games is not abandoning The Lord of the Rings franchise, despite reports that its MMO project has been canceled. Jeff Grattis, Amazon's Head of Games, indicated that the team is working on a different game set in Tolkien's world.
New game experience in development
The MMO's status remains unclear, but Grattis stated that the creative team is exploring a new game experience that does justice to the IP. Layoffs at Amazon Games affected the MMO team, and remaining MMO developers are now focused on Lost Ark, Throne and Liberty, and New World.
Grattis said: "Our creative team continues to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien's world; we are working closely with Middle-earth and remain excited about the IP." This suggests a shift in direction rather than a complete halt.
Amazon Games has not confirmed the cancellation of the Lord of the Rings MMO. The company has not provided a timeline for the new game or clarified what form it will take.
