Micron Technology and SK Hynix have each reached a $1 trillion market capitalization within a 24-hour window, joining Samsung in an exclusive group of memory chip manufacturers. This milestone reflects the intense demand for advanced memory products driven by artificial intelligence workloads.

Memory chipmakers join Samsung as AI demand drives unprecedented valuation surge

The primary catalyst behind this valuation surge is the rapid adoption of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips used in GPUs powering large language models and generative AI systems. Micron has accelerated its production capacity to meet these specialized requirements, shifting resources away from conventional memory lines.

Micron reported second-quarter revenue for 2026 at $23.9 billion, representing a 196% increase compared to the same period last year. Analysts project third-quarter earnings will climb further to approximately $33 billion as HBM production scales and pricing strengthens across AI-focused memory segments.

Manufacturers are actively reallocating fabrication capacity from standard DRAM and NAND flash products toward AI-optimized chips. This strategic pivot has begun driving up global component prices for consumer electronics, with smartphones and laptops expected to see modest cost increases in the coming quarters.

Industry analysts warn that supply constraints could persist through 2028 based on current production roadmaps and demand forecasts. Dell CEO Michael Dell publicly noted that device demand will likely continue outpacing available memory supply until at least that timeframe.
