According to reports, Apple is working on a giant foldable tablet that may change the landscape of the high-end iPad products. The new iPad, dubbed iPad Duo, is said to have a significantly bigger screen area than existing products. The idea behind this is to give users a portable computing device that might be a replacement for a laptop in certain scenarios.
Analyst predicts niche launch with high pricing and Corning glass
Inspiration for the design is said to be taken from Huawei MateBook Fold. As per reports, the tablet will be two iPad mini-sized devices connected via a book-style hinge. Based on the design proposition, it seems that the focus is on having a bigger screen to enjoy media, as opposed to the typical tablet use case.
- Display Size: 18 to 20-inch
- Form Factor: Foldable tablet
- Screen Technology: Ultrathin glass cover supplied exclusively by Corning
- Expected Launch Year: 2028
- Estimated Initial Shipments: Up to 1 million units
Reported by Ming-Chi Kuo, the foldable tablet is said to arrive in 2028. It will apparently have an 18 to 20-inch display when unfolded. Also, analysts estimate that up to 1 million units could be shipped in the initial phase, suggesting a niche product. The foldable display is said to have exclusive ultra-thin glass cover provided by Corning.
Since it’s a foldable device and it’s presumably a complicated mechanism, the price is said to be higher than the existing iPad Pro. Moreover, with relatively low production numbers (estimate) and supposedly premium pricing, it is not going to be a replacement for regular iPad products. If you want to have a big portable screen, you’ll have to wait for a few years to get this specific form factor.
