Epic Games announces the 2026 AI MegaJam, a 4-day event where developers can push the boundaries of AI in game development. The significance of this event lies in breaking down the conventional barriers of game development by enabling the use of an unlimited number of AI agents to help build playable games. For developers who have dreamed of prototyping new mechanics or art styles without months of manual coding, the AI MegaJam offers a structured contest format.

Unlimited AI agents allowed in four-day competition

The event will take place from November 12 to 15, with an on-site portion planned for November 14 and 15 in San Francisco. Developers need to build a playable game using either Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). The stipulation to build a playable game within these frameworks ensures that all games will be built within Epic’s key platforms. This emphasis on engine-based AI tools helps narrow down the scope to AI integration specifically within these platforms rather than general software development.

A key feature of the competition is the use of unlimited AI agents for development support. This sets the technical parameters for the challenge. On November 11, a livestream will announce the competition theme, providing participants with one day to plan their approach. This setup gives developers a clear head start in terms of implementation and creativity after learning the theme instead of wasting the first day on brainstorming.

The competition offers prizes such as $7,500 for the best overall UE or UEFN-based games. Additional prizes include development continuation grants up to $50,000 to help further develop their games. The official website invites participants to incorporate any AI tools into their process, whether for asset creation or coding agents. This gives developers a chance to prototype mechanics they may have wanted to explore but never had time for.

The AI MegaJam is a clear example of the changing landscape of game development workflows as AI integration becomes more common. Epic Games is offering both the platform and incentive (financially) for developers to explore these new tools. The on-site portion in San Francisco will likely showcase the best submissions at the end of the competition.
