Valve music designer, Mike Morasky, dropped a clue about the upcoming next Half-Life game during GameSoundCon 2026 when he mentioned the codename 'HLX' in a panel. It's important as it's the first time a dev has directly referred to the franchise's future since the 25th anniversary earlier this year. And this means a lot for the hardcore Half-Life fans who have been waiting for decades for a new installment. Now they have something to latch on, besides the insider info.
Insiders claim the next installment is playable and not a VR title
While Valve hasn't officially announced a 3rd installment in the main Half-Life series, the game is in development according to industry insiders. And prominent Valve insiders say it's progressed to a point where testers were able to play through the whole game last summer. Tyler McVicker (known Valve insider) claims it's not a VR game. They're polishing it at the moment.
There's a lot of mystery around what's happening with the project. It's unclear exactly. What we know is that Mike Morasky said that Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version.
So there's definitely some unique stuff going on with the technical side. The codename HLX was already in the news these past couple of years. It was thrown around by insiders. It was found in game files.
So yeah, we've been keeping an eye on Half-Life. We covered the recent teaser that started all the speculation. It seems now, at least according to the latest reports, that it's not a VR game but a traditional PC / console game. The fact that there's a playable build and now mention from the dev helps keep Half-Life alive and at the forefront of everyone's minds, until the official announcement.
