According to security researcher, pepsipu has managed to break into the Nintendo Switch 2 console. This is an important development as it shows the new console is hackable and isn't as sealed as everyone thought it to be. It can also be used to make changes to the assets of the game which is a cause of concern as it affects online multiplayer in an instant.
Security researcher demonstrates asset injection and data extraction on the console
He has shown this using Mario Kart World which is exclusive to the Switch 2 console. The exploit is used to introduce third party characters like Cinnamoroll, Peter Griffin, Hatsune Miku etc in the game. It is interesting to see how easily third party assets are added to the game breaking all kinds of protection on the console.
This jailbreak is a tethered one which means that the changes are not permanent upon rebooting the device. The researcher mentions that the hack reportedly uses AI technologies to detect protection loopholes on the system. That's quite interesting as it shows a very advanced way of detecting loopholes which might not be possible by conventional means.
Additionally, they are saving copies of the files outside the console which means that data can be extracted out of it. We have been closely following the Nintendo Switch 2. Earlier we covered some reports about the possible $499.99 price hike for the console. With this security breach, things just became a lot more interesting for early adopters.
At the moment this seems to be an isolated hack with only the demonstration done by pepsipu. We aren't seeing anything more than that. This being a tethered jailbreak means that it will need manual steps every time to reboot the console.
So, that means normal users won't be able to do much with this. A reminder that consumer hardware isn't entirely safe from security research.
