Apparently, Microsoft is considering a customizable Xbox Game Pass plan in which users can select individual features of the service. This move could potentially disrupt the established structure of features like online multiplayer and day one access being part of the included bundles of subscriptions. A customizable plan might give consumers a way to save money if they want specific features.

Microsoft is reportedly considering a customizable subscription model for the service.

Report suggests modular subscription options for online play and day-one access

However, if you want everything, the current standard subscription might be the better choice. Ultimately, it's about giving users more control over their subscriptions.

With this new plan, you would have the ability to add individual features to the service, like DLC, online multiplayer, day one access, cloud gaming, and so on. The current Game Pass already provides these features as part of the bundle, so a customizable plan will give you more options in this regard. According to Fortune magazine, Xbox is working on a new plan for this, with sources telling the outlet this information.

Of course, we don't know if Microsoft's officially going for it, or what prices will be. Furthermore, we don't know if Microsoft will change the games, perhaps by publisher.

Separate from this story, in another report, it was found that Game Pass made nearly $5 billion in revenue for Fiscal '25. These numbers help drive home how important this service is, strategically for Microsoft. In the past, for example, Microsoft decided to pull back on day one Call of Duty releases for Game Pass due to issues converting players. Perhaps this new plan's design could be informed by the past data to try and get the best of both worlds to please both players and keep the platform sustainable.

We'd previously covered the last Game Pass update. Many of the same issues with stability and balance were discussed. An idea like a customizable subscription model would be a drastic change in structure to the core service.

If it does happen, then this will be a big change from the current all or nothing model of subscriptions. Unconfirmed at this point, but it does suggest the possible evolution of a more personalized gaming service.

Microsoft is still in the planning stages for this customizable subscription service, and it's not yet confirmed. We'll have more on this potential new tier of subscription as Microsoft evaluates this proposal further. This kind of flexible structure could potentially change how we think about and engage with these digital subscription services going forward. For now, we can just look forward to possibly more flexible ways to get the games we love.
