After 30 years, the original Super Mario 64 mystery has been solved. YouTuber mochi64 has, with the help of algorithmic analysis, figured out what the real inscription on the plaque says. The conclusion puts an end to the decades-old conspiracy theory that the character Luigi was secretly playable.
Algorithmic analysis reveals plaque text and ends decades-old Luigi conspiracy
The mystery concerns a small plaque you can see in the last castle level. The text, blurred as it is, has been believed to say "L is real 2401" for quite some time. There was a rumour going around about how Luigi was a secretly playable character that was removed for the final game.
Now mochi64 has created a program that tries all 530 fonts with millions of combinations. The program manages to identify the 32×32 pixel texture as being an Adobe Palatino Bold Italic. The resulting inscription turns out to say "Eternal Star.
We hope so". It's known that Luigi was removed because of memory constraints, as confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto.
On GitHub, mochi64 has posted the code and also a 40-page verification report. Nintendo has not yet confirmed this inscription. It's just based on technical matching, as opposed to an internal statement. So this brings an end to the speculation on what the plaque is meant to say.
