Anbernic pushed out a new large software update to their RG DS handheld. In particular, they added the 1.1 version of their operating system. This is significant for gamers as it improves the battery life and stability of games when it comes to retro games. In short, this impacts the gamer experience when it comes to playing classic handheld games on the dual screen device.
New OS 1.1 release adds single-screen mode and Vulkan support for PSP emulation
To start, the bulk of the changes center around the emulation of Nintendo DS. In particular, Anbernic updated the NNDDSS emulator to 1.02. They did this to increase the performance of games, as well as reduce the power usage, for DS games. In fact, we were seeing some similar themes around stability when we last covered the RG DS update.
- OS Version: 1.1
- NNDDSS Emulator Version: 1.02
- PSP Rendering API: Vulkan (optional)
- New Feature: Single-screen mode
Beyond that, Anbernic introduced a new single-screen mode to system settings. This allows you to turn off the bottom screen and conserve power for any single-screen games you might want to play. They're also adding the option for Vulkan rendering for any PSP games using RetroArch. The goal here is to create a more stable experience and higher FPS on many of the games.
This update is now available to the public for any RG DS handheld with 16GB of storage using microSD. If you have a 64GB variant, you need to get in touch with customer service to access the new software. Lastly, Anbernic said that the primary update is that they added the NNDDSS emulator to 1.02. This is supposed to increase performance of the games, and reduce the power usage for games that were made on the Nintendo DS.
