On October 16, 2024 two pallets of ZOTAC RTX 5090 GPUs have gone missing at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos international airport. The incident points to the major supply challenges and steep market prices around NVIDIA’s premier GPU at the moment. Brazilian and US markets now have even less options with major distributor’s inventory evaporating.

Theft of two pallets at Sao Paulo airport removes at least 63 units from market
It was Brazilian distributor Oderço Matos who confirmed the loss when official sources weren’t responsive. Addressing the incident in an Instagram post Matos pointed out that two pallets of anything won’t just go missing at an international airport. NVIDIA and ZOTAC didn’t publicly comment on the incident.
According to Matos the loss amounts to about R$2.5 million. That’s roughly $470,000 USD. It’s safe to say at least 63 units of RTX 5090 are missing, based on acquisition costs.
There is still no clarity on the exact number of GPUs that went missing. We’re talking rough estimates based on difference between acquisition cost and market price.
Such high-end GPUs are fetching around $8,000 at Amazon in US. Brazilian market has them going from R$ 33,000 up to R$ 39,000 BRL. Or approximately $648,525,271. The theft is effectively taking a chunk of hardware out of the market at a time when RTX 5090 is still in high demand.
We’ve been keeping a close eye on RTX 5090 including our earlier story about Zotac RTX 5090 SOLID replaces failed. This is another complication in the highly volatile supply chain. It’s a loss that showcases risks involved for distributors and how scarce it is for buyers who are eagerly looking forward to such GPUs.
