Activision has had to change their formula for the Call of Duty franchise because the fans are fed up with the repetitive games. Activision admits that just changing the location and having no new ideas is not what the people want anymore. This is significant because it means Activision is moving away from the annual games that have been standard for so long now. This means that in the future, the games will be very different from each other and not just slight variations on the same game.

Modern Warfare 4 closes current story arc as Activision seeks innovative gameplay

One of the focal points in this change is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Activision has confirmed that this will be the epic ending to the current Modern Warfare storyline. This is basically the end of the story for the characters and the plot of the most recent games. They are basically saying the story is coming to an end and they want to give us a definitive ending to the story instead of leaving things open for more sequels.

In addition to the epic ending, Activision is working on a new sub-series for the Call of Duty franchise. The name, location, and gameplay style for the new sub-series have not yet been revealed. Activision is looking for new and innovative ideas that will set this new sub-series apart from the main Call of Duty games. Some of the current story characters might show up again in a future game, but in a different form.

According to Tyler Bahl (the Chief Marketing Officer at Activision), the short bursts of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games with new locations were not what the community wanted. Bahl said that the people want something new. Just switching to a new time period in history is not enough anymore.

This is Activision basically admitting that they are listening to the community and that the people are getting tired of things. They want them to be more innovative, instead of just pumping out the same games every few months.

Activision admits that they can't just keep coming out with Modern Warfare and Black Ops with just a new location anymore. They are now trying to find new ideas for the games. Activision is trying to find new things that they can do to keep the people engaged again.

The next game coming out is Modern Warfare 4, which is the narrative end-cap. They are also working on a new sub-series. This is a huge change from how things have been going.
