Jagex cancelled their RuneScape Reignited project just under two weeks after the project was publicly announced. Jagex has officially cancelled the project as player feedback has not been kind to the direction of the game. It's a quick turn around to a project that could have been a major effort. As a result, those looking forward to this new experience need to adjust expectations.
Jagex cancels the project after community criticism
A new experience for the RuneScape franchise was the goal for the cancelled title. The idea was a new take on the game as detailed by Jagex. As stated, the project was one with rebuilt progression systems and new challenge pillars.
Jagex hoped to bring new life to some of the core mechanics without losing the character of the game. Unfortunately, the project's sudden cancellation leaves the reboot, as specific, in question.
An early December release was planned. The project was destined to launch with the initial announcement. However, as Jagex revealed, the project did not click with the community in its brief time.
It appears as though Jagex has realized that they did not have their finger on the pulse of what the community wanted. As such, we've got an acknowledgment that their current direction is not what the players are looking for. The struggle between developer vision and player desires is evident.
Our most recent RuneScape Reignited update came when it was originally released. The update we detailed had similar balance/stability elements that led to this backlash. As we can see with this quick cancellation, the issues may have been harder to fix than expected. The influence of player feedback remains strong for drastic direction shifts in-game.
Jagex has officially cancelled development on the RuneScape Reignited project. As a result, the game will not be coming out, as planned, in December. Now Jagex is looking to hear the player feedback on the direction of this project. Of course, that leaves the RuneScape franchise continuing on without this specific reboot effort.
