Blizzard has taken the game from concept to development. With the production of Diablo V, Blizzard has just confirmed their work on the next entry in their dark fantasy series. This news is important for gamers, as it gives a solid timeline of when the next entry in the franchise will return to Sanctuary, following the previous entry's story. Blizzard's indication that they've crossed the threshold has been the release of visual proof of the early stages of production for Diablo V. This gives players some tangible proof that the game isn't just a rumor anymore.

Diablo V was officially announced at Blizzcon 2026. Where Blizzard laid out the storyline details of the new game. The new game will take place around a hundred years after Diablo IV.

This is a world where Diablo has already won. Giving the game a grim narrative backdrop that's been dubbed by the developers as the dawn of the apocalypse. The narrative is drastically different from the previous game's theme of fighting back against an invasion. Instead, players will find themselves in a world already under attack.

Blizzard's head of cinematics for the franchise, Neil David Carter, has officially indicated the start of production for the game. Neil David Carter posted a photo of the studio on X. It shows the first day of shooting for the game's cinematic sequences. The picture is also tagged with #Diablo5 The photo is a key piece of visual proof that the game is not in early pre-production but active production.

Blizzard has already confirmed the classes that will be playable for the game. Those are the Demon Hunter and Monk. Also included is the new class, Plague Knight.

The game will probably rely on procedurally generated locations and dungeons. Not a singular open world. This appears to be a key component of the game's core gameplay loop.

As a result, this is probably the reason behind the choice. The preliminary release year target for the game is 2029. This gives Blizzard a few years to get the game's elements ironed out.

As they are busy working on the new game, Blizzard has confirmed Diablo IV will continue to get updates post Diablo V release. So even with the next game, Blizzard will still be supporting the current player base throughout the transition period between the two games. Players will have Diablo still being active while Blizzard develops the next game.
