A fan developer was able to port the Nintendo Switch version of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse to run natively on Android devices. This technical breakthrough is important because it provides a possible way for Android players to enjoy the game, especially as official PC version of the game faces stability problems. It demonstrates how reverse engineering can enable games to be adapted for different platforms.
Unofficial port translates Switch graphics to Vulkan for mobile play
The developer who goes by the pseudonym u/BelmanteGu in online forums has shared their work on r/decomps. The goal is to bring the game unofficially to Android devices. The game is published by Evil Empire. The key aspect of this work is the conversion of the game's graphics commands from proprietary Nintendo NVN API to the open Vulkan standard used in Android.
As of now, a demo version of the game is running on Android devices. It's still a work in progress. According to the developer, the interface and anti-aliasing features are currently broken. The team plans to add FSR scaling technology to boost performance. They aim for a frame rate of 60 FPS or above.
At the same time, the official PC version of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is facing technical challenges. Some users on Steam have reported problems like black screens and game freezes. This has led to a mixed user rating. The fan's unofficial port to Android shows interest in playing the game on mobile.
The developer's project is unofficial and no release date or commercial release has been confirmed. Although they managed to run the demo on Android, there are many more steps ahead to fix graphical issues and optimize performance. This example demonstrates some of the technical changes by the community to make the game run on Android.
