Googlebook OS compatibility issues block Minecraft and Fortnite on the Asus Googlebook 14, though retro emulation works well.

Google's new operating system, known as Googlebook OS, is being trialed out on the Asus Googlebook 14 laptop. Unfortunately for mobile gamers, the experience has both pros and cons. It appears that Google's new software is like a mix of Android and ChromeOS, but the big issue is that it doesn't yet support major games like Minecraft and Fortnite. This is a pretty big problem, as this severely limits the laptop's potential as a mobile gaming rig, despite the top-of-the-line hardware.

Asus Googlebook 14 testing reveals significant Android game compatibility issues

Googlebook OS is being tested on the Asus Googlebook 14 laptop, a powerful device with an Core Ultra 5 325 CPU, 32 GB LPDDR5x RAM, and a 3K 120 Hz OLED screen. This is a great basis for running power apps and emulation software.

  • Display: 3K 120 Hz OLED
  • RAM: 32 GB LPDDR5x
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 5 325
  • Emulation Performance (PSP): God of War: Chains of Olympus at 60 FPS with 4x resolution scaling
  • Emulation Performance (GameCube): Auto Modellista at 60 FPS with 4x resolution scaling

Our tests have shown that native, compatible Android games on this new OS work fine on the Googlebook. The problem is that the laptop isn't particularly compatible with Android in general, according to ETA Prime. It appears that the new Googlebook OS is riddled with compatibility issues that are causing some Android games not to work properly.

When it comes to emulating old console games using specific software, this laptop is pretty good. For example, it can run God of War: Chains of Olympus in PPSSPP with 60 FPS and 4x resolution scaling. Or, it can play Auto Modellista in Dolphin GameCube with 60 FPS and similar resolution scaling. This shows that even if the laptop can't run modern Android games, it's pretty good for retro gaming.

We've confirmed that the Asus Googlebook 14 can run high-resolution emulators for PSP and GameCube. However, the device is still hampered by the current iteration of Googlebook OS, which means you can't play some popular modern Android games. This means you should think of the Googlebook 14 as a retro gaming capable device, not a modern Android gaming laptop.
