Konami is preparing to return to the Castlevania franchise, and the producer says the wait for fans will not last a decade. The studio aims to revive the series while the renewed interest from the Netflix animated series is still fresh. This shift matters because it signals a concrete commitment to new content rather than a distant, uncertain project.
Konami aims to revive the franchise while interest from the Netflix series remains high
Producer Tsutomu Taniguchi discussed the franchise's future ahead of the 40th anniversary. He confirmed that the team is currently focused on a project titled Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. He also noted that the audience has changed, with fewer active players but more new fans who may not know the games well.
The next main installment will not take ten years to develop, according to Taniguchi. He argued that such a long gap would make the effort to bring the series back lose its meaning. The format of the new game remains unconfirmed, with possibilities including classic, Metroidvania, 3D, or entirely new approaches.
The last main installment mentioned was Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, released in 2014. The team is currently focused on Belmont’s Curse, although, according to him, it's hard to imagine a situation where the next game would only be released in ten years: in such a case, the efforts to bring the series back would lose their meaning. Konami appears ready to move forward with the series while the momentum from recent adaptations holds.
