Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives on a single Blu-ray disc, a format choice that directly impacts how players install and store the game. This decision simplifies the physical package but requires a persistent internet connection to complete the setup. Buyers with limited storage space or slow connections should note that the disc alone does not contain the full experience.
Square Enix director explains cost-saving single disc strategy
Square Enix developed the title to fit its massive data footprint onto one physical medium. The game weighs about 200 GB, which exceeds the capacity of standard Blu-ray discs. To accommodate this size, the publisher shipped only a portion of the data on the disc itself.
Players must download the remaining game files from the internet after inserting the disc. This mandatory online step ensures the complete 200 GB package is available for play. The physical release includes a single disc rather than a multi-disc set, which reduces manufacturing costs.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi stated he did everything to ensure the game was released on disc in boxed versions. He noted that avoiding a multi-disc set saved the company from the expense of producing up to three discs. This approach contrasts with previous entries in the trilogy, which utilized two discs for their physical releases.
The physical distribution model prioritizes cost efficiency and packaging simplicity over offline convenience. Players will need to manage their storage and bandwidth to access the full game content. This release structure marks a shift from the dual-disc format used in earlier installments.
